From the Bronx River to the Flushing Waterways, billions of gallons of sewage and stormwater pollution flow into the waterways surrounding New York City each year.

To manage this immense volume of pollution, the Clean Water Act requires New York City to create “Long Term Control Plans” detailing the methods and amount of the estimated 20 billion gallons in stormwater the city discharges annually. These eleven Long Term Control Plans (LTCPs) will decide the future of New York City’s waterways for decades to come. Seven of the eleven total plans have recently been approved by New York State without public participation.

The New York City Council Committee for Environmental Protection is holding a public hearing on wastewater issues on Wednesday, December 13th at 10am and this is our time to voice our concerns. 

Clean water, community, and open space advocates can put their concerns on the record in front of city agencies and media outlets as we advocate for:

• • Capture of stormwater and sewage, not chlorination
  • More green infrastructure and incentives for private properties
  • Improved transparency and value of public input
