Riverkeeper has partnered with Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory since 2006 to develop and implement our Hudson River Estuary monitoring program. Our partnership with CUNY Queens College continued from 2008-2019. Our science partners advise on all aspects of our water quality monitoring projects.
Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory is one of the world’s leading research centers, where more than 300 research scientists seek fundamental knowledge about the origin, evolution and future of the natural world. It is part of The Earth Institute at Columbia University, which mobilizes the sciences, education and public policy to achieve a sustainable earth. Queens College, City University of New York, prepares students to become leaders of our global society by offering a rigorous education in the liberal arts and sciences under the guidance of faculty dedicated to both teaching and research. The School of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Queens College utilizes a multi-disciplinary approach to the study of our society’s most pressing environmental challenges. The School’s faculty conduct research on issues, such as climate change and clean water supply, with a global scope while maintaining a particular emphasis on issues impacting the residents of New York. Dr. Andrew Juhl, Co-Principal Investigator, LDEO: Dr. Juhl is a Lamont Associate Research Professor at Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. He has extensive experience in oceanography and sampling in coastal waters. Dr. Juhl oversees the acquisition and processing of the environmental sensor measurements for the Hudson River water quality project. For more information, visit http://www.ldeo.columbia.edu/user/andyjuhl.
Dr. Gregory O’Mullan, Co-Principal Investigator, Queens College: Dr. O’Mullan is an Assistant Professor in the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Queens College, City University of New York and also holds an Adjunct Research Scientist position at Lamont-Doherty. He has expertise in environmental microbiology and coastal water quality. He has worked with the microbial ecology and nutrient cycling of multiple estuarine systems including the Hudson River, Chesapeake Bay, and Monterey Bay. Though 2019, Dr. O’Mullan oversaw field sampling and microbiological analyses for the Hudson River water quality project.
